Despite advances in the urban water sector in Afghanistan, there are still shortfalls and today most of the
population still lacks access to improved sanitation.
Currently there are no or very few centralized / large scale sanitation solutions in operation. Therefore, wastewater is generally conveyed through storm water channels into the rivers or infiltrated into the groundwater through soak pits. Neither of these options are suitable and causes major health and environmental impacts. NMAWO has developed a strong local base in survey, design, M&E operation of wastewater treatment system in Afghanistan.
