NMAWO Act Responsible, Think Sustainable

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

The main objective of the NMAWO program unit is to enhance quality of life and contribute to sustainable development by ensuring access to clean water and sanitation facilities, as well as reliable, sustainable, and affordable energy.

NMAWO’s WASH interventions aim to improve health and quality of life among communities, particularly as limited access to safe water for drinking and household use, coupled with inadequate hygiene knowledge and sanitation facilities, lead to a rise in waterborne diseases and health crises, including COVID-19.

In recent years, NMAWO has continually focused on improving its services to address the growing need for WASH solutions across communities impacted by conflicts, natural disasters, and health emergencies. Active warfare and the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated challenges, highlighting the urgent need for expanded emergency WASH services to cater to internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and host communities. Key execution strategies that NMAWO embarks on in this unit include:

  • Water distribution networks
  • Water infrastructures
  • Water Treatment and Purification Systems
  • Sanitation facilities
  • Hygiene Promotion

NMAWO strongly focuses on effective water management and preservation by adopting strategies such as:

  • Water and water resources management
  • Promoting water economy
  • Rainwater management and conservation
  • Effective and efficient use of water
  • Introduction of new water technologies

In addressing the energy challenges faced by poor rural and urban communities, NMAWO introduces alternative and renewable energy solutions. This includes energy efficiency programs, effective energy distribution, and climate-resilient water and energy solutions. Training communities in climate action further empowers them to respond proactively to environmental challenges.

NMAWO maintains a robust emergency WASH capacity, characterized by fully equipped Emergency Response Teams and strategically located stockpiles of resources to launch rapid assessments in various provinces of Afghanistan. Delivering emergency WASH services at the onset of crises can significantly impact the lives of displaced individuals—however, sustainable solutions play a crucial role in restoring dignity, resilience, and a pathway to recovery.
